Varanam Aayiram Review

Gautham Vasudev Menon is back with a film straight from the heart. The director, who believes in meaningful cinema, is trying to push the cinematic envelope with Vaaranam Aayiram.
The film is clearly meant for niche audiences, and not for mass viewing. It is a tribute to the director’s dad, who passed away last year. The treatment and narration are purely autobiographical with most of it taken from real life incidents laced with cinematic liberties.

In a nutshell, the film is personal and deals with the deep bonding between a loving and devoted father and his son who is trying to discover himself. Menon’s life story may be woefully long and meandering ( 2 hours 55 minutes) with a great first half, but post Interval, it lags. Still it works and grabs us where it matters and leaves a lump in your throat.

Actor Surya is already busy shooting for his next film ‘Varanam Aayiram.’ Director Goutam Menon said the shooting for the film had begun in Chennai. Producer of the film Oscar Films’ V.Ravichandran

The crew will also fly to the U.S. soon and shoot at the Berkley University, San Francisco. Goutham is planning to shoot important sequences at the famous Brooklyn University. Two songs composed by music director Haris Jayaraj are ready.

Art director Rajeevan will erect a mammoth set abroad to shoot one of these songs. The camera by Rathnavelu and Thamarai has penned the lyrics.

A trim Suriya sports a teenager look in the film. Sameera Reddy and Divya are the heroines.

Music composer Harris Jeyaraj and director Gautham Vasudev Menon share a good rapport between them. The two have come together to work for over 30 songs with almost all of them going on to top the chartbusters. Since ‘Minnale’ to ‘Varanam Aayiram’, the two has been able to come up with a mix of catchy melodies, hip-hop and racy romantic numbers which have found a favorable place with the masses.

Joining the list of successful ventures from Harris – Gautham stable is ‘Varanam Aayiram’.

Speaking about the audio, Gautham Menon had said, ‘Varanam Aayiram’ is a tribute to the music my parents made me listen as I grew up, from when I was ten till I reached 17 years. My head is still filled with melodies I listened to during that period and a constant rhythm runs in my system, around which I write stories. The songs compliment those melodies and created by Harris Jeyaraj, who believed in my search for good music.’

Harris provides a constant rhythm all through the album with consistent energy level. The likes of Shruthi Haasan, SPB Charan and Hariharan chipping in for a song are a major highlight of this album. Harris has come out with a retro, hip-hop music, which is sure to go places.

Thamarai has penned all song but for Yethi Yethi, which Na Muthukumar has contributed.

Adiyae Kolluthaey – Krish, Benny Dayal, Shruthi Haasan

A perfect beginning with electrifying guitar that sets up the right memento for the anticipated flick. It is more a kind of a song played at rock band with a touch of melody in the middle. Shruthi Haasan has rendered her voice for the number which has Krish and Benny Dayal at their best.

Shruthi’s open-throated vocal as interlude and the additional percussion in the song are a delight to listen to.

It is a battle royale! Sun TV Network and its boss the dynamic Kalanidhi Maran is going to release his Sun Pictures new Jeeva film Thenavattu on the same day as Surya’s Gautham Menon masterpiece Vaaranam Aayiram on November 14.

On the face of it, two films releasing in different genre means nothing in Kollywood. But below the grease and paint there is tension in the atmosphere.

Breaking News! News has just come in that that Gautham Vasudeva Menon’s magnum opus Vaaranam Aayiram, will not light up this Diwali on October 27!

This has come as a major disappointment for Surya and Gautham fans across the globe who were eager to watch the film during the festival weekend.

According to sources in the trade, the film has been postponed to November 14, nearly three weeks after the festival.
