For some time now, Telugu filmmakers have been introducing Bollywood models and upcoming actresses into Tollywood.
The trick usually works, and many put it down to the appeal for the northern beauty in Tollywood. However, out of the dozen or so actresses who tested waters this year, only a couple of debutants like Sneha Ullal, Shweta Prasad and Aksha tasted success and also signed a couple of new films, while the rest went down without a mark. Among the Bollywood imports, only a handful impressed with their acting skills, while others seemed to rely on physical attributes rather than acting prowess. The dusky beauty Urvashi Sharma’s role was the only different one, where she was a seen in thriller titled Three. The rest, namely, Adithi Sharma, Sonal Chauhan, Megha Burman, Krithi, Ishana and Manjari Phadnis played the clichéd lovers, but audiences weren’t amused. On the other hand, the Telugu audiences patronised Sonia and Swathi’s roles over the sexy sirens of Bollywood.

Although, we can’t squarely blame the debutants for duds like Gundejallumanadi, Rainbow, Three, Ekaloveyudu, Keka, Ankit Pallavi & Friends, since they all bombed mainly due to bad scripts. Supporting this view, director Teja says, “Only a good script finds patronage with the audience irrespective of Telugu and non-Telugu speaking actresses,” and adds “Filmmakers just chase the trend. One Bollywood debutant was quite awful in a recent hit film, but has been signed for a couple of films.” Teja says that even Rajnikanth couldn’t make a bad script work. Director Krish of the Gamyam fame holds a different view altogether. “What really matters to the audience is whether that particular actress fitted into the role. So, as such, I don’t find any new trend,” says Krish, who believes that ‘creativity’ has no boundaries.

Telugu girl Swathi stormed into scene with the smashing hit Ashta Chemma, followed by Sonia of the Happy Days fame who enthralled viewers in the romantic comedy Vinayakudu to score back-to-back hits. “Initially, the audience will have that apna girl feeling but later they judge the actress on merits,” says Sonia. Another native girl Bindhu of Avaikai Biryani who has signed Puri’s next film has no personal issues with non-Telugu speaking actresses. “It will be nice to have more Telugu girls around and also we are capable enough to be here,” says Bindhu.
Will this new resurgence give us hope of once again creating actresses of the caliber of the Vijayashanti and Ramya Krishna? We’ll have to wait and see.
